The experimental laboratory “Max Planck Laboratory for Experimental Research in the Social Sciences” (econlab) was founded in 2014 in close partnership with the Max Planck Institute for Tax Law and Public Finance to facilitate the use of experimental methods in the department’s research.

The researchers of the Max Planck Institute for Innovation and Competition used the laboratory to get a better understanding of innovative behaviors and motives that lead to innovative outcomes.

The econlab used to feature a flexible space with 32 individual cubicles with computers as well as infristructure for mobile experiments. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, on-site experiments at the laboratory were suspended. With the shift towards online experiments with larger and often more representative samples, the econlab began providing server infrastructure to host online experiments while the physical laboratory currently remains inactive.
